Three Approaches to the "Chord Tones Only" Exercise

The Three Approaches

We'll repeat these in each of the following demo videos:

  1. Rubato, strict rhythm. "Rubato" means you're free to stretch and contract the time, so you'll have to play alone. Pick one rhythmic value like quarter notes (counting "one two three four, one two three four" as you play) and maintain it.
  2. In time, any rhythm. Play with a metronome, a backing track, or other people. Use any rhythm you like, but stay in time with the chord progression.
  3. In time, strict rhythm. Play with a metronome, a backing track, or other people. Maintain a consistent rhythm that's not too challenging. Start with whole notes: four beats on each note.
